A strong smell of gas was detected this morning (10/26) at Tate Elementary School. The fire department and gas company were immediately notified and worked to identify and repair the leak. Families were notified of the incident via Infinite Campus, Facebook, and X (formerly Twitter), and regular updates were sent out. Tate Elementary School families were also called by Pickens County School District staff. The leak at the school was found and repairs were made, however, the decision was made to cancel classes for the day in order to thoroughly vent the school and ensure a safe return for tomorrow.

Students that were dropped off by car and staff were immediately relocated to the old Tate gym, not connected to the school, and later transported to Harmony Elementary School. All bus riding students were redirected to Harmony Elementary School.

We implemented a relocation plan in an effort to make sure our elementary students were housed in a safe and secure location similar to what they were accustomed to.
Thank you to our staff at Tate Elementary School, Harmony Elementary School, and the District office for working together and to our food service and transportation staff for safely transporting and feeding our students. And finally, thank you to the parents and families for being flexible and understanding while we worked through and waited for the all clear from the gas and fire departments.
