JMS FFA
Jasper Middle School Principal Neil Howell recognized the JMS FFA for receiving the North Region Chapter of the Year Award for the 4th consecutive year and also receiving the National Three Star Chapter Award. Advisor for FFA is Todd Dobson.

PCMS Math Team
Pickens County Middle School Principal Chris LeMieux recognized the PCMS 7th and 8th Grade Math Dragons Team. The team won the Fall 2009 Berry College math Contest. Coaches were Rhonda Shaddix, Stacy Jent, Jill Liberatore, and Diane Jackson.

Superintendent and Principals
Superintendent Mike Ballew presented all the Principals with their Georgia Accrediting Commission Certificates. All Pickens County Schools are accredited with quality through the Georgia Accrediting Commission, Inc. for 2009-2010.

National Level Certification in Construction
Pickens High School Career Technical Agricultural Education Director Shannon Gable recognized John and Tommy Tatum for receiving their National Level Certification in Construction Technology. Kevin Ward from CEFGA was in attendance to present John and Tommy Tatum with a national certified certificate. Gable said that John and Tommy are excellent teachers and do a wonderful job for the students at PHS.

Ace Hardware Owner Kirk Garner presented Pickens County Middle School Principal Dr. Chris LeMieux with the Highest Yearly Attendance Banner for school year 2008-2009.

SACS Plaque
Pickens High School Principal Chris Williams introduced Pickens County Extension Agent Rick Jasperse. Jasperse introduced his assistant Clarcy Kirby and the 4-H state winners from Pickens County and they were presented with certificates of achievement from Williams. Students recognized were Bob Jasperse, Caitlin Roland, C.J. Fellows, P.J. Wilkie, and Rachel Wigington.

SACS Plaque
Pickens County School system on January 27, 2009 received District Accreditation through AdvanceED and (SACS CASI) Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement. Superintendent Mike Ballew presented the plaque and banner that was received from AdvanceED to the Board. Board Chairman thanked all those who participated with the SACS visit that helped our district to be accredited.

SACS and PTO
Parent/Community Involvement Coordinator Amberle Godfrey recognized all the schools Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) Officers and School Advisory Councils. They were presented with an appreciation certificate and a reception just prior to the board meeting.

Readers of the Year
Pickens County Reading Council Treasurer Sherry Carter recognized the readers of the year and presented them with certificates and Barnes and Noble gift cards. The Readers of the Year are Hunter Hermann 2nd grade, Parker Walters 5th grade, Abby Gibson 6th grade, and Michael Land 10th grade. Michael Land was recognized as the State Reader of the Year as well.

Governor's Honors
Pickens High School Principal Chris Williams presented the students that were selected for Governor’s Honors. These students are Nathan Bates for Technology the nominating teacher is Angela Quarles and as an alternate Michael Land was chosen for Mathematics the nominating teacher is Suzette Hermann.

Academic State Champions
Williams recognized the JV Academic Team State Champions. The champions are Jessica Bradley, Ben Burnley, Taylor Gobie, and Michael Land. The advisors are Seana Thompson and Debra Schlenke.

PCMS Reading Bowl Team
PCMS Reading Bowl Team - This group of dedicated readers won the 2009 North Georgia Regional tournament on February 7th against 21 other middle school teams including Cherokee and Cobb County middle schools. This team would later finish second at the north division reading bowl tournament on February 21st against Ola Middle School from Henry County. Had PCMS won the north division, they would have went to the state championship at the University of Georgia. Their coaches were Sue Watters (head coach), Sandy Greene, June Gilbert, and Karen Gurty.

PCMS Cheer Squad
PCMS Cheer Squad - This group of talented athletes were the grand champions at a regional competition cheer tournament conducted on February 7th entitled the 2009 Cheer Tech Peachtree Classic. They won their division as well. Their coaches were Rebecca Holan (head coach) and Karen Petts

PCMS Math Dragons
6th Grade Math Dragons - This group of dedicated math students won the 2009 Spring Berry College Math Competition conducted on February 26th. In individual competition, Kyle Watters won 1st place and Calvin Martin placed third. Their coaches were Carrie Stephens and Lynne Hope.

Jake Andrews
Jake Andrews was notified on March 2nd by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) for winning their state essay competition. His essay was focused on the Gettysburg Address. His teacher was Rosemary Nelson. He will be recognized on March 28 at a state DAR luncheon.

Pickens County Middle School - PCMS received state and national recognition at the Georgia Middle School Association Conference and Exhibit on February 24th when the school received the 2009 Georgia Lighthouse Schools To Watch Award. PCMS is one of only 15 Georgia middle schools to be recognized currently as a Georgia Lighthouse Schoo

Pickens High Schools Principal Chris Williams said thank you to the board for all you do. PHS CTAE Director Shannon Gable announced Jason Segers as the National Proficiency Award winner in Forest Management and Products. Gable announced Andy Bishop as the National FFA Band participant.

Retirees
Superintendent Mike Ballew and Chairman Trammell recognized the 2008-2009 retirees and presented them with a plaque. Retirees included Opal Castle, B.J. Ferguson, Delane Lewis, Patrick Gallagher, Rita Sue Loggins, Melvina Carlan, Angela Wolfe, Roy Stanaland, Freddie Gibson, Jimmy Adams, Bruce Godfrey, Emma Julia Washington, Wendy Jackson, Ann Bruce, Peggy Mosley, Belinda Howard, and Melissa McEntyre.

Golf Team
Pickens High School Assistant Principal Harold Culbreth announced that the PHS Golf Team won for the 2nd consecutive year the Region AAA Golf Tournament. He said the four girls did an excellent job representing PHS.

FBLA
Career and Technology Director Shannon Gable announced that PHS FBLA competed in various events at the State Leadership Conference. Tyler Weaver placed third in personal finance and Kaleb Clark placed tenth in E-business and second in client service. Advisors are Carissa Parker and Chris Wallace.
